Scientist* - Machine learning for optical communication networks with QKD

Fraunhofer HHI conducts research on next-generation secure optical communication networks and the use of quantum key distribution (QKD).

You will be part of a highly motivated and international research team. The department also operates one of the most modern research laboratories and test fields for optical communications in Europe.

What you will do

Your activities will focus on research and development in the application of machine learning (ML) for routing and key distribution optimization in QKD networks, including implementation of ML algorithms in Python and their experimental validation in our testbeds. You will also contribute to the development of our network planning software tools and extend them for application in QKD networks. In addition to research work in existing projects, your responsibilities will include interacting with industry partners to further develop joint projects, presenting R&D results in the form of project reports, journal articles, and presentations at conferences, and supervising Master's and Bachelor's theses.

What you bring to the table

  • Scientific university degree in electrical engineering, communications engineering, physics or a related subject, preferably with a doctorate degree
  • Excellent knowledge in the field of optical communication networks
  • Excellent knowledge in the field of machine learning
  • Excellent programming skills in Python
  • Experience in software development and version control software such as Gitlab
  • Excellent language skills in German
  • Team spirit, a structured approach to work, and the ability to independently develop ideas for new research activities  

The following knowledge is an advantage:

  • Basic knowledge in the field of quantum key distribution
  • Basic knowledge of telemetry streaming protocols and frameworks
  • Good language skills in English

The position ist limited to 2 years.
