The Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft currently operates 76 institutes and research institutions throughout Germany and is the world’s leading applied research organization. Around 30 000 employees work with an annual research budget of 2.9 billion euros.
As a leading research institution based in Berlin, the Fraunhofer Heinrich Hertz Institute creates innovations for the digital society of the future and is a global leader in the field of optical data transmission. We offer the coveted combination of a highly interesting scientific environment and insight into industry-related work.
Bottlenecks in the optical data transmission infrastructure arise, among other things, because fiber connectivity is shared among many users in the passive optical network (PON). The SAMOA-NET project is exploring the potential of space division multiplexing (SDM) to eliminate bottlenecks in the optical access network. In this context, the space division multiplexing (SDM) will be implemented using VCSEL arrays and multicore optical fibers.
