The TMT primary mirror, which consists of 492 hexagonal segments forming a 30 metre mirror, is polished by Coherent using advanced Stress Mirror Polishing (SMP) technology. This sophisticated method enables Coherent to convert meniscus mirror blanks into off-axis aspheric curves with minimal residual spatial error, achieving an impressive polishing rate of one segment per week.

The market has been waiting a long time for such an innovation and Coherent's SMP equipment and measurement technology, developed specifically for the TMT, represents a ground-breaking advance in the field. This technology not only speeds up the production process but also ensures high precision, making Coherent's solution an exemplary solution for the stringent requirements of the TMT. Coherent brings in-depth expertise in large-format precision optics, consolidating its position as a leader in this field.

‘Coherent has recently completed the installation of an advanced CNC ultrasonic machine capable of processing optics up to two metres in size. This marks the next important phase of the TMT programme. This machine will be instrumental in bringing the rods into their final hexagonal shape,’ explained Brandon Turk, Vice President & General Manager of the Optical Systems Division. ‘The Thirty Metre Telescope is an awe-inspiring project and we are very proud to play a major role in the manufacture of its primary mirror, just as we did with the James Webb Space Telescope. Reaching the milestone of our 100th polished rondel for the TMT is a testament to our proven track record in ultra-precision optics and high-volume manufacturing.’

Dr Robert P. Kirshner, Executive Director of TMT International Observatory, added: ‘We are delighted to be working with Coherent on the all-important primary mirror for the Thirty Meter Telescope. Coherent has polished the Keck mirrors and the JWST mirrors - we know we are working with the A-team when we work with Coherent. The facility and the machines are impressive, but the most important component is the people: I was delighted to meet them and tell them about the Thirty Metre Telescope.’

As Coherent continues to advance the TMT project, the company remains committed to providing complementary products and services within the same business unit and from other business units to support various applications. Given the maturity of the product and the imminent general availability, Coherent is determined to maintain its leadership in precision optics.
