Brief Outline
The Physikalisch-Technische Bundesanstalt (PTB) is the national metrology institute responsible for scientific and technical services. Founded in 1887 as the Physikalisch-Technische Reichsanstalt on the initiative of Werner von Siemens and Hermann von Helmholtz, it now falls under the jurisdiction of the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy (BMWi). PTB employs around 1,800 people at its locations in Braunschweig and Berlin. Its business divisions are structured into the fundamentals of metrology, metrology for the economy, metrology for society, and international affairs.
